Unlike the hatch with which it shares its name, the Astra sedan features unique styling thanks to its origins as the Chevrolet Cruze in other markets, although under the skin the two are closely related.
The Astra sedan arrives to replace Holden’s locally-assembled Cruze which finished production in 2016, with Holden going to great lengths to reassure customers that a local testing and calibration program has taken place to ensure the Korean-sourced Astra is the right fit for Australia.
The four-model Astra sedan range will comprise LS, LS+, LT, and LTZ grades - again helping distance the four-door from the hatch's R, R+ RS, and RS-V designations.
All Astra sedan variants are powered by a 110kW/245Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic for the base-model LS, or a standard six-speed automatic on the rest of the range. The more powerful 147kW 1.6-litre engine from up-spec hatch models isn’t available in the sedan.
Pricing for the sedan starts from $20,490 plus on-road costs, but as an introductory special Holden will offer the LS manual for $21,990 driveaway. The LS automatic steps up to $21,490 plus on-roads, or $23,990 driveaway.
Standard LS features include six airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera with rear parking sensors, auto headlights, cruise control, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Additional features on the LS+ include a leather steering wheel, projector headlamps with LED running lights, auto high beam assist, and a safety step-up including camera-based lane keep assist, forward collision alert and a forward distance indicator as part of a system dubbed Holden Eye. LS+ pricing starts from $24,990 driveaway or $22,740 plus on-road costs.
Moving up to the LT adds extras like auto wipers, 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and DAB+ digital radio, heated mirrors, automated self-parking, plus blind spot alert for $27,990 drivaway or $25,790 plus on-road costs at its regular price.
The range-topping LTZ scores leather appointed seats with front seat heating, an electric sunroof, single-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, and extra exterior chrome. Holden hasn’t set a fixed driveaway price for the LTZ which starts from $ $29,790 before on-road costs.
Despite receiving a five-star ANCAP safety rating, the Astra sedan was called out for not offering autonomous emergency braking either as standard or as an option which is standard on several Astra hatch variants.
