Wey luxury cars from GWM no longer under consideration for Australia
No Wey, no how: GWM Australia has confirmed the Wey brand is no longer under consideration, as it chases success in Europe.
The GWM brand Wey has been ruled out for Australia, with the firm instead targeting European markets.
A spokesperson for GWM Australia told Australian media at a new-model showcase at the Beijing motor show this week the Wey brand "was not under consideration for Australia right now".
GWM Australia says it is happy with the current line-up of brands it sells locally, which includes Haval, Tank, Ora, and GWM.
Though Wey was previously under consideration for an Australian launch in 2019, no models have ever been sold here – despite being manufactured in right-hand-drive for the UK market.
While no explanation was given for the decision, GWM's Haval has been inching itself away from the value end of the market, and producing more premium products with each model release.
As reported by Drive earlier this week, GWM Australia is currently considering adding the luxury Tank 700 off-roader to its range – which would likely be the first model from the company to be priced at over $AU100,000.
