The FX is offered in three model grades (GT, S and S Premium) and with a choice of three powertrains - a 3.7 litre petrol V6, a 3.0 litre turbodiesel, and a high-performance 5.0 litre petrol V8.
Pitched as a competitor to the likes of the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6, the Infiniti FX puts an emphasis on sleek, head-turning design and scintillating performance. With a starting price of $83,900, it also offers compelling value for money.
The entry-level FX37 is powered by a detuned version of the Nissan 370Z's 3.7 litre naturally-aspirated petrol V6. Producing 235kW and 360Nm, the FX37 can sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 233km/h.
Fuel consumption for the FX37 is listed at 12.1 l/100km on the combined cycle, but those looking for a smaller fuel bill would be better served by the FX30d.
Pumping out 175kW of power and a stout 550Nm of torque, the FX30d consumes a relatively thrifty 9.0 l/100km on the combined cycle.
The flagship of the range is propelled by the muscular VK50VE 5.0 litre V8, which marries a lightweight all-alloy block with sophisticated twin-cam heads and also features Nissan's VVEL variable valve timing and lift mechanism.
The VK50VE is good for 287kW and 500Nm, and can take the 1.9-tonne FX50 to 100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. Top speed? 250km/h.
It's as thirsty as you'd expect though, with a claimed average fuel consumption of 13.1 l/100km.
All engines are hooked up to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which features downshift rev-matching, a manual mode and column-mounted magnesium shift paddles.
The FX is built around a modified version of the 370Z's FM platform, and rides on double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.
S and S Premium models also get Continuous Damping Control, which uses electrically adjusted shock absorbers to enhance handling.
Power is taken to all four wheels via the ATTESA-ETS AWD drivetrain, which can funnel up to 100 percent of drive to the rear axle and 50 percent of drive to the front axle.
On standing starts, the torque split is an even 50:50.
The FX50 S Premium and FX30d also get active rear steering, can turn the rear wheels up to 1 degree to tighten the turning radius at low speeds, and enhance stability at highway speeds.
Braking hardware is shared between all models, with 355mm rotors and four-piston calipers up front, and 350mm rotors and two-piston calipers at the rear.
Features in the base GT model include Bi-xenon headlamps, foglamps, a powered tailgate, 8-inch touchscreen display, sat nav, 10GB on-board music storage, a glass sunroof, 20-inch alloys and keyless entry and ignition are all standard, along with a Bose 11-speaker audio system.
In addition to the above, the GT also gets familiar luxury staples like leather upholstery, heated wing mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, Bluetooth phone and audio integration, a USB audio input, a reverising camera, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control and a speed limiter.
Step up to the mid-grade S model, and you gain front sports seats (14-way adjustable for the driver, rather than 10-way), 21-inch alloys, dark chrome exterior trim, a black headliner, Continuous Damping Control and rear active steering on the diesel and V8 petrol.
The flagship S Premium adds a host of passive safety features, including Infiniti's Around View Monitor, radar-guided cruise control, a forward collision sensor, lane departure warning and a system that allows the driver to crawl through stop-start traffic without having to touch the brake.
Standard safety equipment for all FX models comprises a full suite of six airbags (front, front side, full-length curtain), three-point seatbelts for all passengers and anti-whiplash front headrests.
Stability control, traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist and a brake-based limited-slip system are also standard.
