Video: Robotaxi gate crashes working construction site

The self-driving car was herded by construction workers as it attempted to navigate its way out of a Los Angeles car park.

An autonomous Waymo robotaxi has been filmed driving through a working construction site in the US – with the footage uploaded to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

In the video, the self-driving car can be seen stopping and starting on a stretch of dirt road in Los Angeles car park – with workers cheering and whistling as they moved tools out of the way while they inspected the vehicle.

The robotaxi moved slowly as construction was halted to let the vehicle move through the site without damaging any equipment, with the tradesmen gesturing for the car to get out of the road.

It comes following numerous road incidents involving the Waymo robotaxis, with some US citizens resorting to extreme measures to show their dislike – including vandalising the vehicles.

In March 2024, a would-be thief in Los Angeles attempted to steal a Waymo autonomous car after it had dropped off a passenger at their destination, according to previous Drive reports.

The alleged offender failed to put the vehicle into drive, and refused to follow a Waymo employee’s instructions to leave the unmanned vehicle.

Local police were called to the scene, and officers eventually arrested and charged the alleged thief with attempted grand theft auto.

In a separate incident, a Waymo Robotaxi was vandalised before it was set on fire on 10 February 2024 in San Francisco’s Chinatown during Chinese New Year celebrations.

As Drive previously reported, two unnamed individuals jumped on the bonnet of the car before a firework was thrown into the luxury vehicle.
