2024 Genesis GV80 Coupe unveiled, due in Australia next year

The luxury division of South Korean car maker Hyundai has unveiled a rival for the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe SUVs.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 Coupe luxury SUV has been unveiled in South Korea, ahead of its Australian arrival mid next year.

As the name suggests, it is the sleeker, coupe-styled version of the large GV80 SUV on sale since 2020, and gives the Hyundai-owned brand a competitor for the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe SUVs.

It arrives with the mid-life facelift for the standard Genesis GV80, bringing a new look, overhauled interior, and additional technology features, details published on the Genesis website show.

Australian showroom arrivals are due to commence in the second quarter of next year (April to June), pending any delays.

Exclusive to the Coupe body style overseas is a high-power version of the familiar 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6, which adds a 48-volt electric supercharger – claimed to boost response at low speeds, and increase peak outputs to 305kW and 549Nm.

It is an increase of 26kW/29Nm compared to the regular 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6's 279kW/530Nm, which remains available in South Korea – alongside an entry-level 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with 224kW/422Nm.

The Australian model range is yet to be outlined, however it is likely to focus on either of the 3.5-litre V6s – given the 2.5-litre four-cylinder in the regular GV80 was axed with the most recent model update.

All engines send power to all four wheels through eight-speed automatic transmissions. There is a limited-slip differential on the rear axle in flagship versions.

The GV80 Coupe differs from its standard sibling in its rear-end styling, featuring a sloping, coupe-inspired roofline derived from the GV80 Coupe concept shown earlier this year – with an integrated duckbill spoiler in the shape of the tailgate, and an upper roof spoiler.

It gains a unique front bumper with larger air intakes and small air inlets around the lower edge of the grille, as well as a different rear bumper, black trim on top-of-the-range models, and a unique 22-inch wheel design.

Inside it inherits the regular GV80's cabin with a single, widescreen 27-inch OLED display replacing the previous 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen.

It runs the Hyundai group's latest infotainment software, and the single-screen design allows the background of the infotainment system to blend seamlessly with the style of the instrument cluster.

The climate controls below the screen have been revised with smaller dials and a larger touch panel, and the centre console has been restyled with new gear selector and infotainment controller dials (though touch functionality for the display is expected to remain).

The Coupe is distinguished inside by a flat-bottomed steering wheel with paddle shifters, genuine carbon-fibre inlays, metal pedal covers, and front sports seat trimmed in grain or nappa leather.

Other interior highlights include revised dashboard trim, a new steering wheel design, and features such as a heated and sanitising front-centre armrest, power-adjustable ventilated rear seats, and seatback screens for rear passengers.

Available advanced safety technology includes autonomous emergency braking (with junction assist), lane-keep assist, lane centring assist, adaptive cruise control, auto highway lane changes, and blind-spot and rear cross-traffic avoidance assist systems.

There is also a 360-degree camera, surround parking sensors, Remote Smart Parking Assist from the key fob, 10 airbags, and Micro Lens Array matrix LED headlights.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 Coupe is due in Australian showrooms in the second quarter of next year (April to June). Prices are yet to be announced.
