2022 Toyota HiLux models spied in camouflage

A handful of camouflaged HiLux prototypes have been spied, but is Toyota testing the rumoured GR Sport variant?

Camouflaged 2022 Toyota HiLux prototypes have been spotted driving in convoy in Thailand.

The images posted by the Kurdistan Automotive Blog show a number of different HiLux models being tested, fitted with different alloy wheels and exterior accessories.

But considering Toyota only recently updated the HiLux with a facelift, and is still some years away from being replaced with an all-new model, it's possible these are new variants or special editions unique to the Thai market.

A spokesperson for Toyota Australia told Drive there are no major changes to HiLux planned in the near future, but said the company's local arm always considers new variants.

However, media reports out of Japan earlier this year suggested Toyota is planning to release a GR Sport HiLux in late 2021, offering a number of styling and suspension enhancements.

"Toyota Australia is aware of the general strong appetite for performance products in Australia and we would be keen to introduce a performance variant of HiLux to Australia, if one were to become available globally," a company spokesperson said at the time.

"At this stage however we have no announcements on whether a HiLux in either GR guise or [a] GR Sport variant will be introduced to Australia, but would not rule it out for the future."

The Toyota HiLux and its main competitor, the Ford Ranger, are both currently manufactured for the Australian market in Thailand.
