While clearly a 'Veedub' in its looks, the new NMC concept wears a new stepped headlight design, along with a tall yet flowing roofline, long C-pillars and a short notchback rear deck.
Like the new Golf, there's a sharply folded character line running through the profile of this 'four-door coupe', and the rear end also gets new chrome-trimmed tail lights.
Measuring 4597mm long, 1830mm wide and 1422mm tall, the NMC is around 50mm shorter in length and 60mm wider than the current Jetta, and some 60mm lower.
Volkswagen claims similiar interior comfort levels between the NMC and the Jetta - suggesting they share the same 2650mm wheelbase - and the concept's boot offers a sizeable 500 litres of storage.
In concept form, the NMC rides on big 20-inch wheels and draws power from the same 162kW 2.0 litre turbo engine that drives the new Golf GTI.
Is this the long-rumoured Jetta CC? It may not debut with that name (the Passat CC has since dropped the 'Passat'), but all signs point to yes.
Despite its "Midsize" naming, we can likely expect this concept to preview a new lifestyle-focused model alongside the small Jetta.
Volkswagen design boss Klaus Bischoff describes the NMC as “avant-garde protagonist for a new compact sedan class”.
And while the Mercedes-Benz CLA can't be considered a direct competitor - not only is it a more premium offering but at it 4630mm long it's also noteably bigger - Volkswagen will be looking to woo buyers chasing the same styling.
Reports suggest the production NMC will be built at Volkswagen's Puebla plant in Mexico, along with a joint-venture factory in China.
