Volkswagen of America has pulled back the covers on five production-based concept cars for the Southern Worthersee enthusiast show - America’s answer to Austria’s Worthersee GTI festival.
Built in collaboration with a range of aftermarket parts suppliers, the concepts for Southern Worthersee (or SoWo as it’s affectionately known) tap into the rich vein of enthusiast support for Volkswagen Group products, showing some factory-level finish and inspiration
Golf GTI RS
Created under the guidance of Sam Dobbins, creative director at Vossen Wheels, the GTI RS features Porsche-style "GTI RS" bodyside decals, a Rocket Bunny fender extension kit to pump out the front and rear quarter panels, and is slammed over a set of Vossen rims (naturally) and topped off with a Thule carrier box mounted to custom low-profile roof racks.
Inside Dobbins has stripped the interior of unwanted distractions, leaving a polished aluminium floorpan, a full roll cage, airbagless steering wheel, and front racing seats, with the rear seats deleted.
Golf R Heritage
For the Golf R Heritage Volkswagen has paid tribute to its home country, with a stripe package inspired by the German flag at the tops of the doors, and a white stripe underlining the bottoms of the doors.
Once again Vossen has supplied the rims, with H&R Springs helping bring the Golf R Heritage down to earth. Otherwise the rest of the package is factory-fresh with Volkswagen claiming that’s how most owners leave their cars.
Golf Alltrack Country
The Golf Alltrack Country celebrates the original third-generation Golf Country - at the time a Europe-only special with Synchro all wheel drive and raised suspension. This time the already raised and AWD Alltrack scores a 50mm lift kit, and a set of chunky BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tyres.
The front bumper is fitted with an LED light bar, a towbar mounted Thule bike carrier with a pair of Trek mountain bikes, and a bucketload of glamping appeal via a roof-mounted tent complete with a flexible solar panel, solar-heated shower, and a boot full of multimedia entertainment gear.
Three batteries hidden beneath the boot floor and charged by the solar panel ensure the movies and music keep pumping, the spare wheel well hides the media computer, and a custom LED lightbar in the tailgate can light your party zone once the sun sets.
Beetle Post Edition
SoWo isn’t all Golfs, with the Beetle Post Edition repping for Volkswagen’s retro star. Championship-winning BMX rider Alise Post provided the creative direction, outfitting the concept with a pair of custom GW Onyx bikes.
Beneath the bikes the Beetle R-Line also scores a lick of Habanero Orange paint, 19-inch Radi8 wheels in a r8b12 design (aka ‘Mr. Drama Queen’ according to the company), and H&R adjustable coilover suspension.
Jetta GLI Nardo
Aussie’s may not be as familiar with the Jetta GLI, essentially Golf GTI mechanicals wrapped in a sedate sedan body (we get the 155TSI Highline Sport instead) but keeping with the stealth theme the Jetta GLI Nardo picks up a Nardo Grey exterior from the Audi catalogue, and over the course of the show “three or four” sets of HRE alloy wheels will be bolted up.
H&R have again supplied a set of coilovers for that ‘just right’ stance, and BF Goodrich have supplied the rubber to wrap those HRE rims with the whole package designed to maintain the Jetta GLI’s simplicity.
