Toyota has again topped an annual survey of trusted brands, beating premium rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz to the top spot.

The survey, which lists brands that Australians trust the most, is carried out annually by magazine Reader’s Digest.

Toyota has topped the automotive category for the ninth year in a row, joining the likes of Coles, Dulux and Weet-Bix as Australia’s most trusted brands.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz were both also listed as brands regarded highly by Australian consumers.

"Toyota has worked hard to develop a rich heritage of class-leading vehicles built on the principles of quality, durability and reliability, all while being fun to drive," Toyota Australia sales boss Tony Cramb said.

"The strong relationship we have built with our customers has also resulted in sustained business success.”

Toyota is currently Australia's best-selling auto brand, with August figures showing 15,638 year-to-date sales - although this figure is down 11.9 percent on the same period in 2013.

The Corolla (29,213 sales year-to-date) remains the top-selling car in a tight race with Mazda's new 3 hatch and sedan (29,069), while the HiLux pickup (25,218) and Camry sedan (13,608) also figure in this year's top 10 sellers.

Surveying 2413 Australians through a trust scale of one to 10, Reader’s Digest listed brands in 46 categories.

The overall list was topped by antiseptic brand Dettol, with the top-10 rounded out by Colgate, Dyson, Dulux, Band-Aid, Parker, Johnson & Johnson, Weber, Weet-Bix and Panadol.

Unsurprisingly, Hills - of Hills Hoist clothes-line fame - was named Australia’s most iconic brand, followed by Arnotts and Vegemite.
