Toyota’s fan-favourite LandCruiser 70 Series will solider on into its 31st year in the local market with plans from the Japanese carmaker to boost safety levels.

In a move designed to lift the 70 Series’ ANCAP safety rating from 3- to the maximum 5-stars, the model will receive a list of improvements including standard electronic stability control.

Brake assist and cruise control are also on the list, while five additional airbags will find their way into the single cab pickup models.

Joining the driver and front passenger airbags introduced as standard fitment in 2009, the new airbags include front-seat side, curtain-shield and driver’s knee.

The updated 70 Series models are expected to arrive in local showrooms during the second half of next year, and updates will cover the full 70 Series range in single cab, double cab, wagon and troop carrier models.

"These updates will support continued strong buyer demand for an unapologetically rugged vehicle that is renowned for its heavy-duty capabilities," Toyota Australia's Tony Cramb said.

"It secures the future of the 70 Series for customers who require a vehicle with an unrivalled reputation for class-leading mechanical reliability and serious towing, load carrying and off-road performance.”

Mr Cramb said Toyota has worked closely with mining, construction and agriculture employers to ensure the updates were suited to the target market.

Since the first 70 Series arrived in Australia thirty years ago, local customers have bought more than 250,000 examples.
