Toyota Australia has added a new Australia-specific variant to its HiLux range, expanding the line-up to 23 models.

Priced from $43,740, the new 4x4 SR Double Cab is aimed at the mining sector and mid-sized trades businesses.

Toyota says the new variant was developed in response to Australian feedback, combining the double cab-chassis design with a 3.0 litre turbodiesel and a five-speed auto.

The company’s Australian arm says buyer demand had shown a desire for five-seat capability with the popular combination of the 126kW/360Nm diesel and automatic shifter.

The new variant joins the existing $40,990 double cab-chassis SR, which combines the 3.0 litre diesel with a five-speed manual.

"This new 4x4 HiLux package has been uniquely developed to meet the demands of workers in the harsh and remote conditions experienced in Australia's mining and exploration industries," Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Tony Cramb said.

"Our dealers are targeting an overall increase in volume as a direct result of the new variant, ensuring HiLux will continue its extensive record of sales leadership."

Safety features with the 4x4 SR Double Cab diesel auto include six airbags, stability and traction control, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.

Convenience features include 6.1-inch display screens with Bluetooth connectivity, and steering-wheel controls for audio, multi-information display (MID), telephone and voice recognition.
