Subaru has announced a recall for its XV SUV and Impreza small car models, due to a potential problem with the starter motor.

The carmaker says that drivers may inadvertently cause damage to the starter motor in CVT automatic models, if they select ‘Drive’ or ‘Reverse’ during the starting procedure and before the engine is properly running.

Should this occur, the damage may lead to an eventual failure of the starter motor, preventing the vehicle from being started.

Models equipped with stop-start technology may then refuse to restart in traffic, causing a potential hazard to the vehicle’s occupants and other road-users.

The recall affects a total of 5369 vehicles from the 2015 model-year.

The recall program will involve inspection of the starter motor during cranking, and units found to be damaged will require replacement.

Regardless of whether replacement is required, all affected models will receive a software upgrade aimed at preventing future damage. All work will be carried out free of charge.

Subaru will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer, or phone Subaru on 1800 226 643.
