Volkswagen looks set to unveil a new seven-seat SUV concept at this year's Detroit Auto Show, according to reports out of the UK this week.

UK mag Autocar suggests that the new model will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s flexible MQB architecture, already underpinning the MkVII Golf and third generation Audi A3 models.

The SUV concept is likely to use an enlarged version of this platform destined for the next generation Passat mid-sizer, and offer similar accommodation to the strong-selling US-market Ford Explorer SUV.

Volkswagen’s existing Touareg and Tiguan SUV line-up lacks seven seat accommodation - a fact that has limited Volkswagen’s success among family buyers.

The Detroit-bound concept is expected to be designed for a lower price point than Touareg, which would help fill the sizeable gap between the Tiguan - the most expensive 103 TDI variant of which retails here for $35,990 - and the Touareg, which has Australian buyers forking out $62,990 for the base 150 TDI.

Volkswagen is yet to officially confirm the appearance of such a concept, but keep an eye on TMR’s Detroit coverage on January 15 just in case...
