This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will play host to the launch of the hotter new Renault Twingo GT, which gives Renault’s tiny commuter car a performance twist.
Developed by Renault Sport, the Twingo GT keeps the standard Twingo’s essential elements, like a rear engine, rear wheel drive chassis, and five-speed manual transmission, but offers more power and retuned handling.
The Twingo’s 898cc three cylinder turbo engine has been tuned to produce a more hearty 81kW and 170Nm, up from the standard turbo’s 66kW and 135Nm. That boost comes from a revised engine map, and new air intake system.
Gear ratios have also been tweaked, to enhance the Twingo GT’s “sprightly, free revving performance.”
Renault Sport has also turned its attention to the variable-rate steering, stability control calibration, and suspension, ensuring the right level of precise driver control from behind the wheel.
Styling doesn’t get a radical transformation, however the GT does pick up a set of unique 17-inch alloy wheels (styled after those of the 2013 TwinRun concept), twin exhaust-outlets, a bodyside air-intake, a de-badged tailgate, LED running lights, and a set of stripes (to make it go faster).
The Twingo will be offered in Piment Orange (shown), black, grey, or white exterior colours, with orange trim details used throughout the cabin, Renault Sport sill plates, and a zamac (zinc alloy) gear knob.
Sadly Australian buyers hoping to get their hands on this rear-wheel-drive hot-shoe won’t have the chance.
Renault Australia hasn’t been able to make the business case work for the Twingo locally, and the higher-priced Twingo GT may prove even more difficult to move in any real volume, that’s despite a RHD version already offered to UK buyers.
