Renault has this week unveiled the R-Space, a people-moving concept that enters as the third in a trio of concepts previewing Renault's future styling direction.

The R-Space follows last month's Captur crossover concept; its flowing and futuristic lines continuing a theme established by last year's R8-lookalike, the DeZir

Measuring 4250mm long, the R-Space is nearly 100mm shorter than the 4344mm Scenic. The R-Space - at least in concept guise - offers greater interior space and flexibility thanks to a floor covered in movable cubes that can be altered to form a variety of useable surfaces.

No less than 27 individual blocks are positioned in the rear of the cabin, using miniature motors to move up and down into a range of  combinations, including a flat storage space, a table, a bench for passengers or - so long as the vehicle is parked - whatever arrangement the mind can imagine.

“We provided a strong visual and functional contrast between the driver environment, where the focus is on driving pleasure, and a surprising and highly-original rear section conceived as a play space for children," Interior Designer Alexandre Gommier said.

With fuel consumption and efficiency as its focus, the R-Space is powered by a 900cc three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 82kW and 160Nm of torque - an engine that Renault says is part of its new TCe modular engine range, due to begin appearing in vehicles next year.

Fuel consumption for the engine is listed at 3.7 l/100km, bringing it down around the levels of the MINI Cooper D and the Toyota Prius. Top speed is listed at a claimed 200km/h, with 100km/h arriving in 11 seconds.
