The production version has yet to be revealed, but that won't stop buyers snapping up all 918 examples: Porsche's new 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid supercar is now on sale.

Australian allocations and pricing have yet to be revealed, but in Europe where the bulk of the top-shelf Porsches are bound to stay, the 918 Spyder will start at €645,000.

In Australian dollars, that works out to about $911,400 - but expect it to cost a good deal more with the usual fees and taxes.

It's also worth noting that the brand's last limited-edition halo car - the Carrera GT - sold for around €450,000 in Europe.

The 918 won't be available until very late in 2013, so to help buyers through the waiting period, Porsche has also announced the special 911 Turbo S "Edition 918 Spyder" - available only to buyers of the 918 Spyder.

Power remains unchanged at 395kW and 700Nm of torque, but the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder gets unique badging, illuminated scuff plates and the same acide green trim of the 918 Spyder concept.

It won't be free, of course - while available only to 918 Spyder buyers, the special 911 Turbo S will still cost around AU$245,000 for the Coupe and $260,800 for the Cabriolet.

About the 918 Spyder Plug-in Hybrid

The 918 Spyder Concept draws power from a hybrid system made up of a 373kW V8 and two axle-mounted electric motors offering a combined output of 160kW.

Thanks to the V8 and the additional all-wheel-drive poke provided by the electric motors, the 918 Spyder reaches 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 320km/h.

Despite its massive power, Porsche says the plug-in hybrid arrangement means the 918 Spyder will use just 3.0 litres of premium petrol for every 100 kilometres.

Porsche design boss Michael Mauer describes the motivations behind the concept's development.

"When we started the 918 Spyder project; we decided we will try to keep it secret. It is a vision for the future of the brand," Mauer said.

"The importance of this car was that, due to the environmental discussion, there are big questions about the future of this type of car - and therefore the future of the Porsche brand. So we wanted to have this symbol that there is a future."

The confirmation of pricing this week follows news last year that the German sportscarmaker would put the stunning concept into production if there was firm interest from enough buyers.

"Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts," Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG said.

"We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

The production version of the 918 Spyder will do away with the always-open top of the concept, gaining a manual roof system with roof panels that are stowed in the front luggage compartment when not in use. The side exhaust pipes have also been dropped.
