Porsche's long-rumoured sub-Boxster performance car is apparently on track for a 2016 debut.
Known only by its internal model code of 718, Porsche's four-cylinder sports car has had a long gestation. Originally part of the aborted VW Bluesport programme, the 718 looks like it may finally be headed to the showroom.
And according to German magazine Autobild, the 718 will be light.
It will also only be available with a four-cylinder engine, most likely the 156kW 1.6 litre turbocharged flat-four whose specs were revealed at the start of this month.
A 2.0 litre and 2.5 litre turbo flat four may also be offered, although it's not clear whether Porsche will keep the larger engine for the entry-level Boxster instead.
Styling is expected to recall the classic 550 Spider of the 1950s, and the cabin will likely be sparsely equipped in order to keep cost and weight down.
And according to Autobild, the 718 - or whatever it ends up being called - will likely go on sale in Europe with a price tag of €39,000 (AU$56,357).
