Opel's answer to the three-door Volkswagen Golf has made its first appearance in production trim, with the Astra GTC revealed today ahead of its June 7 unveiling.

Based on last year's GTC Paris concept, the Astra GTC previews the company's three-door hot-hatch plans, while also offering a glimpse of the regular three-door Astra variant.

In production form, the Astra GTC does away with the lairy front bumper of the GTC Paris concept, although with a top-shelf OPC variant expected, we could see the finned bumper return.

The story is the same at the rear, with the rhombus-shaped dual exhaust tips making way for a more conventional ellipse shape - and just the one of them.

Little else has changed in the GTC's transition from concept to production reality, but at this point, little has been shared about its insides.

With a five-seat interior expected, the Astra three-door range will likely utilise the same engine options offered with the regular five-door.

Petrol engines for the five-door range from a 64kW 1.4 litre, through to a 132kW 1.6 litre turbo. On the diesel front, a 70kW 1.3 litre diesel kicks off the line-up, topping out with the 118kW 2.0 litre.

An Opel Performance Centre flagship has yet to be announced, but the GTC Paris concept came with a 213kW 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine .

With OPC variants available for both the larger Insignia and the smaller Corsa, the Astra is unlikely to miss out.

Australia

Whether Australian buyers will miss out however, remains to be seen. The Opel brand is confirmed for a local launch in 2012, but plans for the model line-up are sketchy at best.
