Volkswagen's Cross-Coupe SUV concept could have a future as part of the next-generation Tiguan line-up, according to reports out of Europe.

Speculation of a sales debut for the Cross-Coupe is nothing new, with the concept's production-friendly design and Volkswagen's versatile new MQB platform making the project an even-money chance for the green light.

While the Tiguan is marketed as a midsized family SUV, the Cross Coupe would target younger buyers driven to the sleek styling of the Range Rover Evoque and the larger BMW X6.

Like the strong-selling X6 and the Evoque, the Cross Coupe wears a design less about off-roading ability and more about high-riding sports style.

It is also likely that the Cross Coupe offers a preview of Volkswagen's next-generation styling. The slender tail-lights and extended grille are likely to make the leap to next-gen production models.

Joining the rumour mill this week however is talk of a stretched version of the regular Tiguan that would accommodate seven passengers.

Reports of a new SUV between the Tiguan and the larger Touareg have been circulating for sometime now, but it is the Lego-like design of the MQB architecture that could give the project the legs to cross the line.

The longer SUV would likely also get a guernsey in the Skoda line-up, with the Volkswagen-owned Czech brand currently without a high-riding offering larger than the Yeti.
