There won't be any aircraft carriers draped in 'Mission Accomplished' banners, but for the Saab faithful this week, the message is the same.

Following news of a desperate plan to purchase the last of 50 incomplete 9-3 sedans, enthusiast website SaabsUnited announced today that funds enough have been raised for the job.

The website's community scaped together more than enough to pay the roughly $48,000 price for the last 9-3. The group says it will contribute the remaining amount to the Saab Museum.

"SaabsUnited has been allowed to reserve this car and our intention is to buy it and place the car at the Saab Cars Museum, where we think it belongs," the group said.

Victor Muller, the last man to try his hand at turning the ailing Swedish carmaker around, offered his own congratulations to the website and its followers:

"Such good news that you managed to fund the purchase of the last Saab to be built (for the time being that is) with the help of so many enthusiasts," Muller said.

"It proves again what a loyal and dedicated following our brand has and I am convinced this support will continue in the future."

The purchased car is expected to be completed later this month, along with 49 other incomplete 9-3 cars, and all of the donating supporters will be recognised on a plaque next to the vehicle's final resting place at the Saab Museum.

As for Saab itself, the brand is currently in administration, with bids for potential future owners currently being evaluated.
