After being teased, then leaked online, Mercedes-Benz has finally made its Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept official, at the same signalling its intention to knock Rolls-Royce off as the pinnacle of ultra-luxury motoring.

The 6 in the name represents the grand coupe’s almost six-metre length (it’s actually closer to 5.7 metres, but who’s counting) making it even longer than the already immense Mercedes-Maybach S 600 sedan.

All that length isn’t dedicated to passengers however, with only two seats - not that that there’s any shortage of space in the leather lined cabin which features a full wrap around touchscreen display that runs across the dash and into the gullwing doors.

From side on the Mercedes-Maybach 6 reveals an almost comically long dash to axle ratio, and sweeping boat tail rear end with an expansive rear overhang designed to recall the look of classic 1930s coupes.

The world of yachting also directs the 6’s style, with an arching chrome strip running front to rear along the body sides to divide the cabin from the “hull”.

Mercedes has also introduced a new Maybach grille, which takes its waterfall style from the grille used on Maybach’s stand-alone products of last decade.

The long hood does not hide a classic V12 engine (as we’d previously surmised), instead the front compartment, with its central butterfly hinge covers the storage space for a bespoke luggage set, while at the rear lift-up panels reveal a champagne chiller.

Power instead is provided by an 80kWh underfloor battery pack feeding four in-wheel permanent magnet synchronous electric motors with a combined 550kW output, allowing the super-sized coupe to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in under four seconds, while prodiving a 500km touring range.

Charging is achieved either by a cable, or through wireless inductive charging, with the 350kW charging capacity capable of adding 100km of driving range in as little as five minutes.

Not only is the big Maybach coupe big on luxury, it’s also big on technology - autonomous driving is just one of its tricks, and when self-driving mode is selected the windscreen becomes a projection screen controlled via gestures.

The seats themselves are embedded with sensors to monitor occupants and make adjustments to seat climate and massage if required - they can also detect the colour of an occupant's clothing and adjust the ambient lighting to suit.

While the Mercedes-Maybach 6 is an impressive design study it is unlikely to see production in its current form, however future products from the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand are expected to take on board some of the big coupe’s cues.
