Dubbed SL Mille Miglia 417, the new special celebrates the 60th anniversary of Benz’s “unexpected” victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia endurance race in Italy.
On that occasion it was a 300 SL that won the production sports car class and finished fifth overall, and Mercedes has sought to capture some of the spirit from the 1955 racer in this current generation SL.
The “417” reference reflects the racing number worn by the 300 SL, which started the race at 4:17 AM and took 11h29m21s to complete the 1597km race distance from Brescia to Rome and back with American John Fitch at the wheel, assisted by co-driver Kurt Gessl.
Available either as a Mercedes-Benz SL 400 or SL 500, the special edition gets the same 245kW six-cylinder or 335kW V8 from the ‘normal’ SL models respectively.
There’s black 19-inch AMG wheels up front with 20-inch wheels at the rear, while the brake callipers housed within are painted red.
Red is also highlighted on the exterior, including the front and rear spoiler lips, while colour options include black metallic (standard), night black, matte white or diamond white.
Mercedes’ ESP Curve Dynamic Assist and adjustable damping system are standard, while the Active Body Control system is optional.
Inside, there’s more red highlights complementing AMG Line seats, special “1000 Miglia” floor mats, black leather features and “SL Mille Miglia” embroidery.
Available from early April, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL Mille Miglia 417 is priced from €14,800 (AU$21,566) for the SL 400 and €12,800 (AU$18,651) for the SL 500 in the German market - over and above the price of the standard car.
No word yet on whether Australian customers will have a chance to order a Mille Miglia 417. Production will be limited to 500 units.
