Mercedes-Benz is preparing to add to its V-Class people-mover range in Australia, but the new model comes with a twist.

Confirmed for a local arrival is the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Activity, which adds a pop-up top and various campervan accessories in place of the V-Class’s usual rows of passenger seats.

Power comes from a 140kW 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption is rated at 6.0 l/100km, and the towing capacity is 2.5 tonnes.

As weekenders head to their chosen destination, the journey is aided by standard satellite navigation and the reversing camera should make for easy reversing into the campsite.

Tight campsites may need to be eyed over before any reversing takes place, as the Marco Polo measures 5140mm x 1930mm x 1980mm.

Mercedes says the Marco Polo combines the best of “functionality, flexibility and recreational capabilities in one vehicle”.

The rear bench seat can be removed to create a larger cargo area, and the front seats swivel around to become rear-facing armchairs.

With the fabric roof popped up, a bed is revealed with a weight rating of 200kg, while the rear seat (assuming it wasn’t removed) folds to make another bed. A folding table package is also included.

While the Marco Polo encourages an ‘outdoor lifestyle’, comforts from home like a rear auxiliary heater are included. The heater can be pre-programed to keep the insides warm while the van is parked.

Owners need not worry about draining the main battery by running the heater, as the Marco Polo is equipped with a dual-battery system.

For warmer temperatures, the campervan has zippered window flaps fitted to the roof material. The total standing height with the roof popped up is 2350mm.

Safety features include numerous airbags, crosswind assist, attention assist, adaptive brake lights, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights along with parking assist with parking sensors.

For owners seeking the most from their travel experiences, options include a manual side awning, Black Lugano leather upholstery, a seven-seater configuration and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The order book is open now for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Activity, with first deliveries for Australia expected in Q3 of next year.

The new model is available in 12 colours, is backed by 25,000km, one-year service intervals and pricing starts from $69,990 plus on-road costs.
