Mercedes-Benz has released a trio of teaser images for its upcoming Citan concept, previewing the carmaker's plans to target the rapidly growing city-van segment.

Like Europe's ubiquitous city cars, the small or 'city van' segment is made up of small utilities that include the (old Barina) Opel Corsa-based Combo, the Renault Kangoo and the Volkswagen Caddy.

Developed under its partnership with the Renault Nissan Alliance, the Citan will slot into the entry-level end of Merc's commercial range, beneath the larger Vito, Sprinter and Vario models.

Mercedes expects to snag a five percent share of Europe's small van market, selling around 35,000 Citan vans each year.

While the sketch shown here features a regular van design, Mercedes says the Citan range will include dual-cab and mini-bus variants, with a number of short- and long-wheelbase options.

The Citan will be offered with a range of petrol and diesel engine options, but, like Volkswagen's small eT! concept, an all-electric version is also under consideration.
