Supercars are designed to be fast, sexy, and exotic. Practicality is usually low on the list of priorities, however with the arrival of the new McLaren 570GT that's all about to change, sort of.

Of course practicality is relative - rather than an SUV, sedan, or wagon, McLaren has made modifications to it's Sports Series and added a side-hinged rear tailgate with an additional 220 litre ‘Touring Deck’ luggage compartment.

Otherwise the hardware beneath the 570GT is the same as that found in the 570S Coupe including a 412kW/600Nm mid mounted twin-turbocharged V8 and 7 speed dual clutch transmission delivering power to the rear wheels.

While McLaren already considers the 570S, and less powerful 540C, as everyday supercars, the 570GT aims to answer the needs of those who demand even more practicality, without sacrificing looks, or performance.

Standard features in the 570GT include eight-way power adjustable seats, a panoramic roof, enhanced dual-zone air conditioning, and Pirelli P Zero tyres featuring the unique Pirelli Noise Cancelling System to reduce noise and vibration in the cabin.

A standard eight-speaker McLaren Audio Plus system comes standard, but audiophiles may prefer the optional 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins, featuring a 14-channel 1280W amplifier, kevlar mid-range speakers and subwoofers constructed from carbon fibre and Rohacall.

The rear glass hatch itself features a carbon fibre frame for added strength with low weight, and opens towards on the kerbside of the vehicle in both left and right hand drive markets. As well as the 220 litre rear compartment, the 570GT maintains the regular 150 litre front storage compartment.

Suspension tune unique to the 570GT includes spring rates reduced by 15 percent at the front, and 10 percent at the rear. Independent adaptive dampers offer Normal, Sport, and Track settings.

While the front end design of the 570GT remains the same as the 570S coupe, the rear features a fixed rear spoiler that sits 10mm higher than that of the coupe, proving a level of aerodynamic performance to match the flying buttresses of the 570S.

Performance figures for the 570GT are slightly dulled compared to the 570S with a 0-100km/h time of 3.4 seconds and a 0-200 km/h sprint of 9.8 seconds, 0.2 and 0.6 seconds slower respectively than the 570S, but hardly disappointing.

Global deliveries of the 570 GT are set to begin in late 2016, with Australian pricing to start at $406,800.
