Mazda has used its Mazda6 Diesel sedan to set a new average speed record at Germany’s ATP oval track in Papenburg.
Mazda’s 221.072km/h effort over 24 hours comprehensively beat the old mark of 209.824km/h for diesel production cars with displacements between 2.0 and 2.5 litres.
Using three of its 2.2 litre SKYACTIV-D diesel-powered 6s, Mazda’s driving team kept the three sedans circulating for 24 hours with the lead car setting the record.
That team consisted of professional drivers, motoring journalists and a selection of car enthusiasts who applied to take part.
The group was evenly matched, as the other two Mazda6s weren’t far behind with just 0.89km/h average separating them after the 24 hours.
