Mazda’s all-new MX-5 Global Cup plug-and-play racer now has a price tag - at least for buyers in the US.

And it’s a bargain, relatively speaking; a fully-prepared racing roadster can be yours for just US$53,000 (AU$76,000).

The order book is open now with first deliveries set to take place later this year. Potential buyers can now view the MX-5 Cup in action as the pace car at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Mazda says the MX-5 is the most road-raced production car in the world, and as such, the carmaker sought to build a version of the ‘5’ which is ready to race straight out of the box.

A number of all-MX-5 race series are planned around the world, including series in the US, Asia and Europe using the identical roadsters.

For winners of each individual series, a 2016 ‘grand final’ is scheduled at Laguna Seca next year with the grand champion awarded a SU$200,000 scholarship and a one-day test in Mazda's IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship SKYACTIV prototype race car.

"For the past decade, the third-generation sports car has been competing in our own MX-5 Cup series, and has been the ideal platform to showcase driving talent in a competitive environment on high-profile race weekends," Mazda’s John Doonan said.

"With the launch of the fourth-generation MX-5, we are raising the bar by making it even easier for aspiring professional road racers to get involved. We expect to sell out the first batch of cars rapidly.”

The Cup is powered by the same 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine found in the road-going MX-5. While Mazda hasn’t handed down a full list of specs just yet, the racer will include a roll cage, large racing wheels and an aero upgrade.

The convertible's foldable roof and door trims have been deleted, and a special data-loaded racing steering wheel is also featured.

If you’re interested, get in quick via the Mazda Motorsports website. Mazda says the US$53,000 price-tag is a special introductory offer.
