An international debut for Maserati's new Ghibli sedan could come as early as next year's Geneva Motor Show, according to reports out of Europe this week.

The report, with US industry paper Automotive News, comes on the heels of Maserati confirming the new model's production future - although a 2014 debut was previously expected.

The Ghibli will take on mid-spec and top-shelf models in the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class lines, along with the Jaguar XF and Audi A6.

Technical details remain unclear, but reports have suggested the Ghibli will utilise a massively modified version of the platform that underpins the new Chrysler 300, while benefiting from Maserati performance tuning.

Engine options are expected to include a turbocharged version of Chrysler's Pentastar V6, offering upwards of 290kW. A Ferrari-sourced turbo 3.8 litre 360kW+ V8 has also been reported.

The Ghibli draws its name from two Maserati models of decades gone by: a two-seater coupe and convertible pair from the 60s and early 70s, and a four-seater coupe offered in the early 90s.

Maserati will look to its new sedan, which will enter beneath the next Quattroporte, along with the Kubang-based Levante SUV, to boost the iconic brand's sales.

The marque currently turns over around 7000 cars per year with its GranTurismo and Quattroporte, but wants to ramp up to 50,000 units annually over the next few years.
