Even more incredible, the Huracan Performante was able to set the record pace free from turbochargers, hybrid power or a carbon fibre chassis, in stark contrast to previous record holders including the Porsche 918 and Nissan GT-R Nismo.
The new Huracan Performante used a naturally aspirated V10 engine, all-wheel-drive and a dual-clutch transmission to record a 6m52.01s lap of Germany's toughest race-track during a high-pressure run in October 2016.
Full technical details surrounding the car won’t be disclosed until its official debut at the Geneva motor show on March 7, but we know it used lightweight bodywork, active aerodynamics and special tyres to get the job done.
Lamborghini test driver Marco Mapelli – who has form in Australia's Bathurst 12 hour race – only had time for one flying lap during the record attempt. Smooth yet committed behind the wheel, the Italian delivered the goods under the supervision of Lamborghini chief and former Ferrari F1 boss Stefano Domenicali.
"This was an incredible and emotional moment," Domenicali says.
"We wanted to achieve the Nurburgring victory in advance of the Performante's launch, which was a challenge in terms of weather and availability of the Nordschleife. Not only did we take the lap record, we took it by some seconds!
"To make this happen is something that every one of the R&D team who worked on this car can share in: it will forever be a defining moment in their careers. I am so proud of everything achieved by Lamborghini people that day and extremely privileged to have witnessed it."
The Huracan's time is the fastest officially recorded benchmark by any mass-produced road car. Radical's open-topped SR8LM has recorded a 6m48s time, but the Le Mans-inspired roadster cannot be registered for road use in many countries including Australia.
