Well, now Jaguar’s gotten on board, with its new Special Vehicle Operations outfit revealing an F-TYPE coupe customised for just such a job.
Developed as part of the brand’s sponsorship of cycling group Team Sky’s assault on the Tour De France, the new special will be used in an upcoming stage of the great race.
While regular team cars are of the more practical wagon variety, with room for more bikes (Team Sky also uses a Jaguar XF Sportbrake), stage 20 of Le Tour focuses on an individual time trial.
This means the two-bike capacity of this customised coupe will be more than enough to get the job done - and Jaguar gets another opportunity to promote the new F-TYPE coupe.
The tweaks for this project are fairly light-on, of course. No need for any power boost in its capacity as a support vehicle, so the F-TYPE’s regular 404kW 5.0 litre supercharged V8 remains unchanged.
What it does get is a custom-made rack mounted to the roof and hatch, and the familiar (to fans at least) blue-on-blue livery of Team Sky.
The XF Sportbrake remains Team Sky’s support vehicle of choice, but for this one round, the new F-TYPE will step up.
Team Sky will need to do the same: at stage 15 of 21, the group’s current leading place is Australian Richie Porte in 15th.
