Jaguar has now released the first batch of photos and a slew of information about its ambitious C-X16 concept, teased earlier this month in the lead-up to its Frankfurt unveiling next week.
Powered by a supercharged 3.0 litre petrol V6 engine that produces 280kW and 450Nm of torque, the C-X16 is given a further boost by a KERS-like electric motor.
Fed by a lithium-ion battery pack, the electric assistance motor delivers up to 70kW and 235Nm, and is activated by a steering wheel-mounted 'push-to-pass' button.
With the electric motor working in conjunction with the supercharged V6, Jaguar says the C-X16 can sprint from rest to 100km/h in an incredibly brisk 4.4 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 300km/h.
Despite its performance, the C-X16 promises reasonable economy. Thanks to a start-stop system, direct injection, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and regenerative brakes, Jaguar says the sporty coupe emits 165 grams of CO2 per kilometre and has an average fuel economy figure of 6.9 l/100km on the combined cycle.
A lightweight aluminium chassis keeps weight down, as does the extensive use of carbon fibre in the interior. The hybrid system and the typical lashings of Jaguar luxury do mean total weight hovers around the 1600kg mark, though.
The drivetrain layout keeps the engine at the front and the driven wheels at the back, and the car's weight distribution is evenly split at 50:50 front to rear.
Measuring 4.5 metres long and over 2 metres wide, the two-seater C-X16 features an atheletic stance and muscule-bound bodylines.
It's a size smaller than the current XK, and if greenlit (and it looks highly likely that it will be), the C-X16 would be positioned as a sub-$200k sports car to rival the Porsche Cayman.
Expect more details to surface next week at the C-X16's Frankfurt debut.
