Images of what could be Maserati's new Ghibli sedan have surfaced online this week, purportedly previewing an early development model of the new car.

If legitimate, the design of this concept suggests the new 5 Series and E-Class rival will draw on the look of the new Quattroporte, with the same high flanks and coupe-like glasshouse featured.

The model shown here wears a simpler headlight design, smaller and more rounded than on the Quattroporte. The grille, while unmistakably Maserati, also takes on a more rounded look.

Whether this model is 'the real McCoy' is unclear, although it suggests the Ghibli could introduce a more smoothed-out look, rather than the sculpted shape and angular lines of the larger Quattroporte.

Little else is known about the Ghibli at this stage, although recent reports point to a Shanghai Auto Show appearanc in April, ahead of an official unveiling at January's Detroit Auto Show.

The Ghibli will take on mid-spec and top-shelf models in the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class lines, along with the Jaguar XF and Audi A6.

At launch, the Ghibli is expected to focus on performance models only, debuting with a twin-turbo 3.0 litre V6 engine a twin-turbo 3.8 litre V8.
