Forget XQ, forget Q-Type. Yes, Jaguar has registered both trademarks, but you won’t see either badge on the rump of its coming new SUV.
Instead, the British carmaker’s first high-riding family car will trade on the warm welcome to its F-Type sports cars with a new take on the theme: F-Pace.
The connection isn’t just a marketing ploy, though, Jaguar’s design boss Ian Callum says.
"The F-Pace is our family sports car," Callum said this week, reminding buyers that the new SUV was inspired in a big way by the F-Type.
“The Jaguar F-PACE, inspired by the F-TYPE, represents a perfectly judged balance of style, performance and practicality," he said.
"It offers a unique combination of Jaguar sports car inspired exterior design, fused beautifully with a thoroughly practical and spacious luxury interior.”
The new name could also offer another hint: if we consider the ‘F’ in Jaguar’s large XF sedan and wagon, we might yet see a smaller E-Pace SUV in the future that would partner with the midsized XE sedan.
(If ‘E-Pace’ doesn’t instead appear on a future electrified F-Pace...)
Spy photos in recent months have shown the F-Pace roaming the streets of Europe in heavy camouflage, disguised for the most part as an enlarged Range Rover Evoque.
Unlike the Evoque, however, the F-Pace will ride on the XE’s iQ[AI] aluminum platform, Jaguar’s version of the architecture that underpins the new Range Rover models.
An unveiling date and location for the F-Pace is still to be revealed, but we can likely expect one of this year’s European motor shows to play host.
