GM has revealed the global version of its new Buick Encore and Opel Mokka SUVs, in the form of the compact Chevrolet Trax.

A local debut for the Trax has not been confirmed, but with the crossover market already a major battleground in Australia, a Holden badge appears all but assured.

The General has confirmed that the Trax will be sold in more than 140 countries - but not the US - and Holden is understood to be considering a local release.

"The Trax provides Chevrolet an entry into a growing small SUV segment and delivers the flexibility, great fuel economy and car-like handling that urban explorers around the world require," Mary Barra, GM senior vice president of Product Development, said.

Engine details for the new Barina-based crossover have not been revealed, although it is likely that GM's 1.4 litre petrol engine - already powering the Encore and Cruze - will feature.

The Encore also features a six-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel-drive layout, and both will likely come to the Trax.

With a markedly different styling language and a significant divide in trim grades, Opel's Mokka could also sell in Australia alongside a Holden-badged Trax.

While the Mokka would enter as a more affordable alternative to the BMW X1 and the MINI Countryman, Holden's crossover would tackle the Subaru XV, the Skoda Yeti and the upcoming Ford EcoSport.
