Chevrolet will equip its new Sonic EV with a battery pack capable of providing up to 200 miles (320km) of range, according to reports out of the US.
Green Car Reports says the new model could be on track for a 2016 or 2017 debut and will be based on the current Sonic light hatch and sedan, rather than the next generation due in 2018.
With the new Volt range-extended hybrid due to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2015, it’s unlikely Chevrolet would want to steal the Volt’s thunder with another new EV shortly afterward.
Chevrolet already sells the smaller sub-light Spark EV with a range of 82 miles (131km) and the Volt with its 55 mile (87km) range on electric power alone.
While General Motors may fail in its bid to see the Sonic EV travel 200 miles on a single charge, the new model will reportedly aim to beat competition from the likes of Nissan’s Leaf, rather than match it.
