There's a new diesel-prestige-performance-SUV-wagon hero in town.

Yes, Audi's new SQ5 covers a few bases, and now it's on sale in Australia priced at $89,400.

As the first diesel-powered model in Audi's familiar S range, Audi has gone all-out with the thumping SQ5.

The bi-turbocharged 3.0 litre TDI engine lays monster torque and power to the tarmac through Audi's all-wheel-drive quattro system and an eight-speed tiptronic auto.

Power from that meataxe turbo diesel is rated at 230kW and 650Nm, comfortably bettering the 180kW/580Nm of the regular 3.0 TDI Q5.

Likewise, the SQ5's 5.1 second sprint to 100km/h sends the regular diesel to the quiet corner, and falls just 0.2 seconds short of the petrol-powered S5 Coupe.

Fuel consumption is listed at a low 6.8 l/100km (although TMR's we-thrashed-it launch review returned 10.4 l/100km).

Other features setting the SQ5 apart from its less-special siblings include a 30mm lower sports suspension kit and a performance-tuned electromechanical power steering system.

Propping up each corner are 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 255/45 rubber, with 21-inch wheels offered as an option.

The SQ5 also picks up the usual S-line styling tweaks, including a unique grille treatment and a new bumper and skirting kit.

In the cabin, there are sports seats trimmed in Pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara, along with brushed aluminium highlights, grey and white instruments, and S-badged versions of the steering wheel and gear shifter.

There's also satellite navigation, Bluetooth with audio streaming, auto air-con, 10-speaker audio, 20GB music storage, a reversing camera, flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel, tyre-pressure monitor and powered driver and front passenger seats with memory function.

The first 60 cars to hit Australia will also be offered with a 'Launch Edition' package option.

The special package demands a $14,720 premium for 21-inch alloy wheels, dynamic steering, Bang & Olufsen audio, digital radio, adaptive headlights (with auto high-beam), heated seats front and rear, carbon inlay, luggage rail system and net, and alarm system.
