Crossovers and performance cars are among the highest-margin products for a car manufacturer, delivering a greater return on a car that, in most cases, costs not that much more to build than the vanilla version it's based on.

So why not combine the two? Demand for SUVs and crossovers continues to rise, while performance cars aren't exactly going out of fashion, and the niche in the overlap between the two segments has been very profitably exploited by BMW and Benz.

Audi reportedly concurs, with rumours circulating in the German automotive media that the four-ringed brand is preparing a crossover version of the mighty Audi RS6 Avant (pictured).

Expected to be powered by the same twin-turbo 4.0 litre petrol V8 as the RS6 Avant, the supposed "RS6 Allroad" is reportedly headed for a launch in the third quarter of 2016 - a date enabled by the relatively minimal spend involved in creating a slightly jacked-up RS6 with plastic body cladding.

Other changes could include under-body protection for mild off-roading, as well as a recalibrating stability control system to accommodate loose gravel and dirt surfaces.

China has been singled out as the car's intended market, but a broader global release may eventuate. It likely won't stay on the market for long though, given an new-generation A6 is expected to debut in the latter half of 2017.
