UPDATE: The new HiLux has now been revealed. Read here.
Toyota’s new 2016 HiLux will make its global premiere on May 21 at a special event in Thailand, the company has confirmed.
The new pickup has already been the victim of multiple show-all leaks in recent months, but Toyota is playing it cool today with the release of a shadowy teaser video.
The video opens with a science fiction-themed scene that counts down to the new HiLux’s launch, before offering a glimpse of its headlights, front bumper and overall front-end shape.
Photos obtained in February and again in April have revealed just about all there is to see of the new model’s styling, inside and out.
Toyota has offered no official details on the new model, although a specifications slide snapped during a presentation in Thailand revealed key engine numbers.
A pair of downsized diesels are expected to feature, including a 132kW 2.8 litre four that offers 450Nm in six-speed auto form and 420Nm with a six-speed manual.
There's also a 125kW 2.4 litre unit that offers 400Nm in auto form and 343Nm with the manual.
Toyota’s 2.7 litre petrol four-cylinder engine is expected to continue, but the same spied spec sheet suggests the larger 3.0 litre six will not appear in the new range.
Watch for all the official details on the new HiLux to be revealed on May 21.
