Toyota has announced a series of changes to its best-selling HiLux ute range for the 2018 model year, aiming to keep the Hilux at the top of Australia’s new car sales chart with new variants arriving to take the place of previous slow-selling versions.
Among the revised range, Toyota has ditched petrol-powered V6 versions of the HiLux which accounted for less than 0.5 percent of sales volumes, while the 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder and 2.4- and 2.8-litre turbo diesel engines remain unchanged.
New variants include Hi-Rider (two wheel drive) extra cab SR 2.8 diesel, double cab WorkMate 2.4 diesel, and double cab SR5 2.8 diesel automatics, cab chassis extra cab WorkMate 2.4 diesel auto, SR 2.8 diesel manual, extra cab SR5 2.8 diesel auto with pickup body and double cab pickup-bodied Workmate 2.4 diesel auto, and SR+ 2.8 diesel auto and manual.
The drive to introduce additional automatic variants comes from a shift in buyer preferences, with automatic HiLux variants outselling manual versions for the first time last year, which has seen the auto options grow from 12 variants to 17 in the revised range.
Overall the range stays at 31 distinct models, with all 4x2 and 4x4 single and extra cab cab-chassis models (23 variants in total) able to carry a one-tonne payload.
Toyota has also introduced an optional satellite navigation and alloy wheel package for SR models for $2000 (listed below as SR+), allowing access to the in-demand accessories without the need to step up to the top-line SR5 range. The SR5 continues to offer optional leather trim with powered driver's seat, also for $2000 (listed as SR5+)
Other changes to the range see all SR models adopt durable PVC flooring, pricing for SR double cab models rises by $70 thanks to the addition of downhill assist control and black door handles, while all other SR variants drop in price by $80 owing to the change to PVC flooring.
SR5 pricing also climbs by a nominal $50 thanks to the adoption of LED front fog lights. Pickup bodied SR and SR5 models also gain a standard tailgate lock.
The engine range sees WorkMate models powered by either a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine producing 122kW and 245Nm or a 2.4-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder with 110kW and 343Nm for 4x2 single and double cabs or 400Nm double cab automatic and all 4x4 variants.
The larger 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel in Hi-Rider and 4x4 HiLux produces 130kW and 420Nm with a manual transmission, or 450Nm with an automatic.
