All models in the range now gain standard steering wheel paddle-shifters, while the Sonata’s tyre supplier has also changed, putting ‘premium’ rubber under each model.
Those two changes are the only alterations made to the base model Active, while the mid-grade Elite also picks up standard rain-sensing windscreen wipers, front park-sensors, an electronic park brake, and heated front seats.
Moving up to the Sonata Premium sees newly-added radar cruise control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot detection as standard, improving the top-model’s safety systems.
New optional equipment includes a panoramic roof for the Elite and beige leather trim available for Elite and Premium.
Mechanically the Sonata range continues unchanged, with a 138kW 2.4 litre petrol engine in the Active, and a 180kW 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine for Elite and Premium, all Sonata models feature a six-speed automatic and front-wheel-drive.
The Active and Elite move to 215/55R17 Continental Conti Premium Contact™ 5 tyres, while Sonata Premium wears 235/45R18 Michelin Pilot 3 tyres, a move welcomed by Hyundai Australia general manager of product engineering, Hee Loong Wong
"Earlier this year Hyundai head office, in South Korea, gave us the option of testing the Continentals and Michelins on the car, and we jumped at the opportunity." Mr Wong said.
"We engaged former Hyundai WRC driver Chris Atkinson to evaluate them at the limit of adhesion under controlled conditions. We have seen gains in outright grip level, ride comfort and quietness."
Other standard equipment remains as before with six airbags, traction and stability control, ABS brakes, auto headlights, rear view camera, rear park assist, and touchscreen audio standard across the range.
Along with the newly added equipment, Hyundai has pushed pricing up, with the Active starting at $600 more than before, the Active rising by $1360, and the Premium, with its added safety features starts at $3500 more than before.
NOTE: Pricing excludes on-road costs.
