First shown as a concept at last year’s Detroit Auto Show, built and partially designed by Holden’s design studio in Australia, the production Bolt sees a style-shift that moves it into line with the larger plug-in Volt.
The Bolt offers a driving range of up to 320km, however beyond that GM is yet to talk about charge times, or pricing for its new model.
At the Bolt’s unveiling, GM Chairperson and CEO, Mary Barra, also discussed the Bolt’s included mobile technologies, firming up the recently announced link between General Motors and ridesharing company, Lyft.
“It was less than a year ago that we revealed the Bolt EV concept and promised to deliver a long-range electric vehicle attainable by the masses,” Ms Barra said.
“The Bolt EV is capable of using the latest mobile app technology to enable car sharing, advanced GPS routing and gamification, all designed to enhance the ownership experience now and into the future.”
The Bolt will also offer increasing capabilities in the future, including accurate driving range projections based on the time of day, typography, weather, and the owner’s driving habits.
Inside, the Bolt will arrive with a 10.2-inch MyLink touchscreen display with widget-based “flip-board style” infotainment interface, GM’s OnStar 4G LTE service enables the vehicle to be used as a WiFi hotspot.
A new MyChevrolet smartphone app offers vehicle charge status, OnStar maps, remote start and cabin pre-conditioning, as well as access to the owner's manual. Down the track owners will also be able to upload their driving data and compete to see who has the greenest driving style.
Production of the Bolt will begin in the US toward the end of this year, with no word yet if GM has any export plans for the vehicle beyond North America.
