Subaru has enhanced refinement levels for its 2016 Forester range, along with slight styling revisions to the exterior and a retuned suspension that's been tailored to Australian road conditions.

The 2016 Subaru Forester features new alloy wheel designs on all models, along with a refreshed front bumper design, new grille, headlamps and rear LED tail lamps.

The Forester 2.5i-S and turbocharged Forester XT and XT Premium gain active cornering LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps for 2016 as well.

Inside, there's new fabric upholstery on lower-grade models, a 3.5-inch colour LCD multi-information display, an auto-up/down passenger window function, Siri voice command compatibility and illuminated vanity mirrors on both driver and passenger sunvisors.

High-grade models also get a memory function on the powered driver's seat, and there's now more generous cushioning in the seat squabs for better comfort and support. Leather-upholstered Foresters also get quilted leather surfaces on the door trims for a more premium appearance.

What you won't see is the extra sound-deadening material that's been added to the dashboard, thicker glass and revised door seals that help quieten the cabin.

MECHANICAL

While power outputs for all variants are unchanged (110kW/198Nm for the 2.0i, 126kW/235Nm for the 2.5i, 108kW/350Nm for the 2.0D and 177kW/350Nm for the 2.0 XT), the 2016 Forester benefits from a comprehensively retuned suspension developed locally for Australian roads and conditions.

Spring rates have changed at both front and rear, there's new valving for the front MacPherson struts, a stiffer front crossmember and a fatter rear swaybar. Rear suspension alignment settings have also been tweakedl, with the net affect being less body-roll and a reduction in noise, vibration and harshness.

A faster steering rack has also been fitted across the range to impart a sportier feel, and the turbocharged Forester XT gains active torque vectoring to improve cornering performance, plus a new transmission calibration in Intelligent and Sport drive modes.

Underbody covers are now smoother to reduce aerodynamic drag, though fuel economy figures remain unchanged with consumption ranging between 5.9 l/100km for the 2.0D-L manual to 8.5 l/100km for the turbo petrol Forester XT.

PRICING

There are no pricing changes for the Forester for 2016, with the range continuing to start just under $30k and topping-out in the high $40k region.

The full range is available to order now, though a Forester EyeSight special edition will arrive later in the year with similar specification to the base model -L grade but with LED headlamps, auto headlights and wipers, sat-nav and Subaru's EyeSight active safety hardware as standard.
