Kia’s first ever sub-compact, the 2016 Kia Picanto has arrived in Australia. This comes after a prolonged "battle" to get the car’s price and specification right for Australia - some five years after the car’s international debut.

Kia promises the Picanto will deliver a “substantial-feeling” car, priced from $14,990 driveaway in a single specification.

Under the bonnet there’s a 1.2 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine (Kia pushes the boundaries a little, calling it a 1.25 litre engine), mated to a standard four-speed automatic, with no manual variant to be offered.

The engine manages 63kW at 6000rpm and 120Nm of torque at 4000rpm, putting it slightly behind the outputs of the recently released Holden Spark, but ahead of the best-selling Mitsubishi Mirage.

Fuel consumption on the official test cycle is rated at 5.6 l/100km combined.

The Picanto also offers four-wheel disc brakes, 14-inch steel wheels, and safety features including six airbags, front seatbelt prertensioners, ABS brakes, electronic stability control, hill start assist, and reverse parking sensors.

Crash testing by independent body, ANCAP, awared the Picanto a 5-Star safety rating.

Inside there’s seating for five, four-door power windows, an illuminated glovebox, multi-function trip computer, manual air-conditioning, and a four-speaker audio system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity including MP3 playback.

The black interior with cloth seat-trim and satin chrome highlights is described as a benchmark in its class, and designed to look and feel like the interior of a car from the class above.

Seven exterior colours are available, including standard Clear White, or premium Midnight Black, Honey Bee, Bright Silver, Dazzling Blue, Titanium Silver, and Signal Red available for $520 extra.

As with the rest of Kia’s range, the Picanto is covered by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, seven years roadside assist, and seven years capped price servicing.
