Volvo has this week launched its all-new XC90 SUV range in Australia. As part of a staggered roll-out, petrol and diesel models are now on sale with a plug-in hybrid to follow early next year.

Pricing for the new range starts at $89,950, making the new XC90 slightly more expensive than prestige players like the BMW X5 (from $84,200) and Mercedes-Benz ($83,900).

To help offset the difference, the XC90 range offers features like seven seats as standard, with all-wheel-drive across the range, and a high level of standard appointments and safety features.

Volvo has squarely targeted the established premium guard with its new offering and makes no secret of its intent to tackle the large luxury SUV stalwarts.

The new starting point also comes in some $20,000 above the entry price of the outgoing 12 year-old XC90. That vehicle, in extended run-out, falls a long way short of the new advanced technology offered in the new model however.

Buyer interest has been sharp, with 160 confirmed orders taken before the car even went on sale. Volvo claims another 400 potential buyers are registered, pending a test drive.

With a focus on 'user friendly functionality' the new XC90 offers an entirely new multimedia user interface. The interior has been made more spacious and flexible, based upon the suggestions of owners of the previous generation, over 12 months of market research.

“The All-New Volvo XC90 is an exciting step towards the future for Volvo in Australia," Volvo Car Australia boss Kevin McCann said, in a statement.

"It’s a vehicle which will continue to redefine the perception of the Volvo brand and deliver on the promise of uncompromised luxury, class-leading technology and world-first safety innovations.”

Entry to the XC90 range comes via Volvo’s new four-cylinder D5 diesel, producing 165kW and 470Nm of torque.

The more powerful 236kW/400Nm four-cylinder T6 petrol range increases the price to $93,950, ranging through to $101,950 for the top trim in the petrol line.

At the very top end of the XC90 range is the T8 Twin Engine, a petrol-electric hybrid system that offers a combined 298kW and 640Nm. Delivery of the T8 Twin engine is expected to follow early in 2016.

All three engines will be mated to an eight-speed auto, along with an all-wheel-drive configuration and fuel-saving stop/start technology.

Official fuel consumption for the D5 diesel is listed at 5.8 l/100km, while the T6 petrol offers a claimed 7.7 l/100km.

Models with the D5 engine promise a 0-100km/h time of 7.8 seconds, while the the T6 claims a 6.9 second run.

Based on European figures the T8 Twin Engine is expected to deliver fuel consumption of 2.1 l/100km with a 5.6 second dash to 100km/h.

The local XC90 range will be offered in three trim grades across the diesel and petrol powertrains: Momentum, Inscription and the familiar R-Design.

The T8 Twin Engine will only be available in R-Design trim.
