  • Tata Xenon gains Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and new features.
  • Dual-Cab ANCAP Safety Rating boosted to 4-Star.
  • Tata ‘Tough Cover’ program launched: warranty, servicing, roadside assist.

Tata’s Xenon pickup, which debuted in Australia late last year, has been given a significant safety upgrade for the 2015 model year.

Headlining those enhancements is the addition of Bosch-engineered Electronic Stability Control, now standard across the Xenon range.

The long-promised upgrade is joined by traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution, hydraulic brake assist, hill-hold assist and drag torque control.

All of this has resulted in an improved ANCAP crash safety score, with the Dual-Cab Xenon model’s rating boosted from 2- to 4-Star this week. (The single-cab variant remains untested, although specifications are identical.)

The new safety rating gives the Xenon a leg-up over the likes of Foton’s Tunland (3-Star) and Mahindra Pik-up (3-Star), and the Great Wall V240 (2-Star).

Existing safety features in the Xenon range include dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes and front seatbelt pretensioners.

Tata has also introduced a new ‘Tough Cover’ program for 2015.

The program’s launch sees the factory warranty and roadside assistance coverage increased from three to four years, with a 100,000km cap on the former.

The four-year roadside assistance is also a segment leader among pickups below $30,000, outdoing the three-year deals offered with the Tunland, Pik-up and V240.

A four-year / 60,000km capped-price servicing schedule is included in the Tough Cover program, with the first of each 12 month / 15,000km services fixed at $385.

Tata says the total cost of the scheduled servicing is $1540, excluding wear and tear items.

“The introduction of Tough Cover is a clear demonstration to buyers that they can trust and have confidence in the Tata Motors range,” Tata Australia boss Darren Bowler said.

The 2015 Xenon range is again powered by a 110kW/320Nm 2.2 litre turbo diesel, available only with a five-speed manual.

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.4 l/100km on the combined cycle, and the Xenon can tow up to 2500kg.

Features include cloth trim, air conditioning, Bluetooth, power windows, USB input with iPod connectivity, captain chair style armrests on the front seats, and remote central locking with immobiliser.

Dual-cab models also feature sat nav and a reversing camera as standard.
