Toyota’s refreshed 86 Coupe range is now on sale in Australia, a few months ahead of its expected third-quarter debut.

Revealed in April, the updated 86 is largely unchanged on the styling front, but Toyota promises improvements to handling, dynamics and interior features.

Importantly, the range’s pricing remains relatively steady at $29,990 for the GT, while the gear-packed GTS is up $500 in manual form and $800 for the auto.

The 86’s pricing shocked pundits in 2012, producing nearly 11,000 sales in the two years since - making Australia the coupe’s third most successful market.

For 2014, Toyota says it has given the 86 a significant ‘under the skin’ update, delivering a more rigid suspension setup for greater handling response and steering feel.

Engineering boss Tetsuya Tada says the goal of a smoother ride and sharper handling, while often competing targets, have been addressed through the use of new suspension mounts, lower-friction oil, oil seals and guide bushings.

Re-tuned shock absorbers also feature, with a focus on both initial movement and at-the-limit operation in spirited driving or on wet roads.

“[The 86] is all about driver involvement, and we are committed to keep enhancing this aspect of the car. The 2015 model year delivers the latest status of 86’s continuous evolution,” Tada-san said.

Tweaks elsewhere include a lightly revised cabin, with a standout change including an upgrade that sees the entry GT model picking up the same up-spec instrument cluster featured with the GTS.

The display includes a digital speed read-out and a rev indicator light to warn of the approaching red line. The auto GT also gains a shift-position indicator.

In the GTS, there’s a reversing camera and a new carbon-fibre look to the instrument-panel surround.

Both models also get a new shark-fin antenna on the roof, “for aerodynamic as well as aesthetic reasons”.

The Toyota 86 is covered by the capped price servicing plan, Toyota Service Advantage, with up to four scheduled services at just $170 each. (See your dealer for specific conditions.)
