The new range includes the $129,900 GL 350 BlueTEC, the powerful $154,900 GL 500 BlueEfficiency and the top-shelf GL 63 AMG, priced at $214,900.
An AMG-enhanced GL is a new thing for Australia, but Mercedes-Benz fans will be more than familiar with its turbocharged powerplant.
Power in the GL 63 AMG is provided by Merc's no-nonsense 5.5 litre Bi-turbo V8 engine, producing 410kW and 760Nm of torque.
Matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel-drive, the big V8 hurls the GL 63 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is listed at 250km/h, and fuel consumption is listed at 12.3 l/100km.
Down one small but significant step is the GL 500, its 4.6 litre petrol V8 offering 320kW and 700Nm - up from 285kW and 530Nm in its predecessor.
At the entry end is the GL 350 diesel, its 3.0 litre V6 turbodiesel offering 190kW and 620Nm - again boosted from the 155kW and 540Nm figures of the previous model. Fuel consumption in the diesel is listed at 7.7 l/100km.
Standard features with the new GL-Class include 4Matic all-wheel-drive, Easy-Pack tailgate system, Easy-Entry third-row access, AirMatic air suspension and adaptive damping, COMAND online connectivity, automatic climate control, Intelligent Light System, glass electric sunroof and an electric parking brake.
Safety features across the range include Attention Assist, Pre-Safe, a 360° camera, Distronic Plus, Brake Assist BAS Plus, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.
