Honda's small new SUV, teased as a concept and revealed in leaked images earlier this month, has finally made its production debut at this week's Tokyo Motor Show.

Dubbed 'Vezel', the new crossover shares its platform with the light Jazz hatch, and marks Honda's return to the hugely popular compact SUV segment, where it last offered the HR-V in 2001.

Destined for a Japanese debut late next year, the Vezel will be offered with small petrol and diesel engines. And, while not confirmed, both front- and all-wheel-drive options are expected.

In Japan, powertrains will include the 87kW/144Nm 1.5 petrol four-cylinder found in the new Jazz, along with a 100kW/170Nm petrol-electric hybrid, again similar to the system used in the new Jazz Hybrid.

The new SUV has kept much of its concept styling, including a largely identical profile and rear-end design.

The front-end has also changed little, with only a simplified headlight internal design and a slightly narrower grill frame.

In Australia, the new crosover will take on the likes of Peugeot's new 2008, along with the Renault Captur, Ford's upcoming EcoSport, the Holden Trax and Nissan's Juke.

More details on the Vezel will be revealed on December 19, when the new compact SUV goes on sale in Japan.
