Audi is improving the appeal of its A4 range by lowering the price of entry into the A4 quattro club this week, while retiring the range’s 3.0 litre models.

Speaking with TMR today, Audi Australia’s Shaun Cleary said that quattro models currently make up more than 80 percent of A4 sales, and the 2.0 litre models have also been leaving showrooms faster than the 3.0 litre options.

New to the range is the $57,100 A4 Ambition quattro sedan, powered by a 165kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual.

A dual-clutch auto version can be had from $59,990, and the dual-clutch Avant wagon model tops the trio at $62,900.

On the diesel side of the A4 Ambition quattro set is a 130kW/380Nm 2.0 TDI model, priced from $59,990 - down from $65,800 for the 2.0 TDI model offered in last year’s range. The diesel is available in sedan form only.

Fuel consumption with the petrol models is listed at 6.7 l/100km for both, while the diesel model lists a more miserly 5.3 l/100km.

Standard features for the A4 Ambition quattro models include 18-inch alloy wheels, Xenon headlights with LED daytime lights and LED rear lights, along with Sports steering wheel fitted with shift paddles.

There’s also MMI Navigation Plus with live traffic updates, tri-zone climate control air-conditioning and leather-appointed upholstery.

Refreshed ‘S line’ quattro models are also available, building on the specifications of the Ambition models by adding uniqely styled 18-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels, sports front seats, Parking System Plus with reversing camera, and a Convenience key.

The S Line models also get a 10-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, six-channel amplifier and a 180W output.

Pricing in the S Line quattro models begin at $65,000 for the 165kW 2.0 TFSI manual, through to $70,800 for the Avant wagon petrol.

Front-wheel-drive models in the A4 range, along with the hero S4, remain unchanged in both pricing and specifications.

Audi sold 158 A4 models in May, for a year-to-date total of 1075. The same period in 2013 saw 218 sales for May and 1036 year-to-date.

Mercedes-Benz continues to own the segment, with 466 C-Class models sold in May (2079 YTD), while BMW moved 432 3 Series models in May (1710 YTD).

Lexus sold 261 of its new IS sedans for the month, marketing 1192 year-to-date sales for the range. Elsewhere in the segment, Infiniti moved 22 Q50 sedans in May, and Volvo notched up 75 combined S60 sedan and V60 wagon sales.
