Renault has added a new long-wheelbase Maxi variant to its local Kangoo light van line-up, while also adjusting prices and specs of the existing short-wheelbase model.

The new Maxi gains a 384mm wheelbase stretch, which expands cargo area from 3.0 to 4.0 cubic meters. Payload matches the previous short wheelbase diesel at 800kg.

An uprated 82kW/240Nm (up from 63kW/200Nm) version of the previous 1.5 litre turbodiesel is now exclusive to the Maxi, and its manual sole transmission choice now has six ratios (up from five).

Combined fuel consumption, however, rises by 0.3l/100km to 5.5l/100km due to the Maxi’s unspecified greater girth.

With the short-wheelbase model, a new five-speed manual petrol variant (previously auto-only) drops the Kangoo’s entry price by $3500 to $20,990.

The four-speed automatic short-wheelbase petrol model also drops in price, now $1500 cheaper at $22,990.

Short wheelbase Kangoos now come with the 78kW/148Nm 1.6 litre petrol engine exclusively, and combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.7l/100km for the manual, and 8.3l/100km for the auto.

Payload for both manual and auto short wheelbase models is the same 650kg as the previous petrol variant.

The short wheelbase Kangoo price reductions are partially a result of a spec adjustment that sees unpainted bumpers, door mirrors (also manual), and partial wheel covers specified on all Kangoo models.

Previously, painted bumpers, painted power door mirrors, and full wheel covers were standard, but Renault explains that the new spec is better suited to the rigours of commercial use.

All Kangoo models now have standard dual sliding doors for side access, and barn doors are the default option at the rear.

A top-hinged tailgate is optional, along with the ability to delete the side sliding doors or add glass windows to the side or rear.

Two option packs are now offered to Kangoo buyers, including the $2000 Pro Pack which brings satnav, rear parking sensors, cargo barrier and plastic cargo floor and wall matting .

The $3000 Premium Pack includes satnav satellite navigation, rear parking sensors, side airbags, painted bumpers, foglamps, driver’s seat height adjustment, power door mirrors, and timber cargo floor.

Short wheelbase models optioned with the Premium Pack gain 15 inch alloys, while Maxis get full wheel covers.
